Country music = incompatible. Very into oral = very compatible.

Well, I hope they will like the same kinds of movies I do...Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter...if not, it's not a deal breaker. It's more of a bonus points kind of situation. Bonus points in the "pro" column if they have watched Game of Thrones, read Harry Potter, like Disney...and if they like country music.

Good question. If someone says they are into , or gospel, I prob wont be compatible with them. If they dont like sushi, well, maybe I can teach them. If they HUNT, nope, they are history. If they are into horror movies, not jokes like the sharknadoes, but true horror, then I dont think it would work out either. Prob other things, positive, if I think on it.

It would probably seem like I have too many dealbreakers, but in practice all of these things tend to go together into a certain lifestyle which is not particularly compatible with mine.

Age and cultural gaps...absolutely. It can create conflict when your life experiences are so different that you can't understand the other's point of view...such as a man with no children or maybe no grandchildren...will he resent if I put my kids or grandkids first in certain situations?

As I'm typing this, I'm also thinking, shouldn't those things NOT matter? In trying to "bring peace" to the world, we encourage each other to try to understand people who are different than we are...try to "walk in their shoes"...wouldn't we want to do that in a relationship??

I have NO idea on the answers to those questions, even for myself...they just popped up so I spit them out for further thought and discussion.

Perhaps, in the understanding across cultures thing...it's about finding how we are similar instead of focusing on how we are different as a large group, and not so much individually.

Holy moly. This is too much thinking for late at night.

Her: "What kind of movies do you like?"
Me: "Hard-core anime."
Her: "Surely you can't be serious?"
Me: "I am serious. And don't call me 'Shirley'."

If she doesn't get that gag, then we're probably not compatible.

I'm at that age where half the men I might be interested in could be right-wing nut jobs so generational markers matter less than current ideology. It sucks to get a blank look tho, when you mention something that made such an impact on society back in the day! Or when you realize someone you thought was 50 is talking about Woodstock or Watergate lol!

Aaaah OK. Lately I *am* realizing how old I am. I was at the place where I volunteer and mentioned to one of the (much younger) volunteers that one particular assignment is "like being the Maytag repairman". She gave me a totally blank look and I realized she was too young to have ever seen the commercial where the Maytag repairman has nothing to do because the washing machines are so reliable

But I don't exactly consider not knowing that commercial a dealbreaker haha.

I do remember a first date where the guy was kind of an old curmudgeon and all of the music he liked was pretty old....and he actually said, "there's been no good music after 1980!" It's not just that that was one of my favorite musical eras, it was the lack of open mindedness, to think that there was NOTHING that might musically interest him after 1979.

Ha, well, my mind likely is twisted already, and it's been that way for awhile...I let myself go down the dark hole but usually don't share it.

This has been interesting post to check back in. Smartasswoman's reference to the Maytag commercials...omg...yes. It's that stuff. They could be a great guy, but if I make reference to things like that and they don't get it...that'll just make me feel old, and who the hell wants that.

I suppose it goes both ways, though, personally, my kids make sure I'm not the out of touch 50 year old who can't follow the conversation of 20 year olds (and they usually don't laugh too hard if I'm lost and ask them to explain something, lol).

Och, ye puir wee scone ye......that's ridiculous behaviour. I mean, yer boy could at least have had the decency and decorum to catch to wet snotters in his hands, then roll them until they congealed a little more, and then he could have flicked them on the wall. Even better, he could have collected them in one area to make cleaning easier for ye!! Bloody youth of today! What do they teach them at school, eh??? Eh???? Brats that they are.........

ps - so when are we having the fart contest??

Same for me.

We don't have to have a lot of interests in common, if we can carry on a conversation and enjoy each other's company.

I have learned far more, and often get along much better, with someone I can LEARN from, but it helps if his Values are similar to mine. The other stuff is just Stuff.

Now that I've seen your response to my comment, I feel kind of silly. I had meant to quote clittywhisperer, although my focus might not be so much on the sexual stuff (but it certainly helps).

So, "Same for me" doesn't make a lot of sense.

I do agree on the cultural references thing you mentioned in your response to me. Like, when I sing along to "Summer of '69", because I lived that summer. It would be weird if someone didn't get the literary, musical and movie references. They need to at least know songs from the same era, even if they don't particularly like my faves. And if I make a reference to a movie or a book, it helps if they've at least heard of it.

I'd have to say the age gap thing would be the biggest for me. Enjoying doing some of the same things out of the bedroom would be good too, otherwise what do you do other than have sex???? LOL.. not that that is a bad thing but 24/7 is a little much!
