This is no insult! Bill Russell is one of the smartest sports figures of that century. He was bright, funny and had a magnificent attitude. No- that's not quite enough. His intelligence puts him head and shoulders above the rest in ANY crowd. Alan Page is another one who by all rights shoulda been a dumb jock, but fortunately didn't get that memo. Those two guys, along with Muhammad Ali, were heroes to me when I was young. They weren't limited to being superlative in their sport- they were men who thought for themselves.
